UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) — The 25th anniversary of the death of a Septa police officer was marked this morning in Upper Darby.

At 69th Street terminal, Septa police commemorated the death of Thomas Sewell, who is the only Septa officer ever killed in the line of duty.

His widow, Jeanne Sides Sewell, was at the at the ceremony.  “And even now, 25 years later, I find myself thinking, ‘Did this really happen to us?’ ” she said today.

Septa chief of police Thomas Nestel described the incident:

“The man stabbed Tom multiple times while Tom was firing his weapon at him, and Tom shot and killed him while the man was killing Tom.”

Sewell says 25 years seems like a blink.

“He was more than a policeman.  He was my best friend and I still haven’t been able to replace him, so that’s hard, even all these years later.  But the sun will come up tomorrow.  But it’s hard.  I’ll always miss him, I’ll always love him.”
